At his home in the area of Chicago Eddy Curry faces foreclosure, the most recent sign of obvious financial distress when it comes to the famous center of the Knicks.
Curry is behind at making payments on his four million dollar mortgage. The filing of foreclosure was made at the beginning of the week at the circuit court of the county of Cook.
Curry had taken out a mortgage of thirty years, with the initial payments per month of almost thirty thousand dollars, when he bought his home at the suburb of Burr Ridge last July 2006. When looking at these figures, it seems that Curry would to be several months behind in making his payments. Curry’s lawyer has refused to make any comments on the matter.
A few years ago, Curry’s family became victims of a robbery at this house, and ever since then, he seems to have experienced nothing but chaos. During the past year, Curry has coped with troubles with the law, professional setbacks and personal anguish.
His ex-girlfriend, who also happens to be the mother of his 3-year-old son, was killed last January in Chicago. Two weeks ago, his ex- driver accused him of sexual harassment, which made Curry look like a bigot and a bully. Although the lawsuit was dismissed recently, the matter was still sent off to arbitration.
Even on the court, Curry faced a losing season. He went to training completely out of shape, ended up developing knee problems and only got to play in three games. Now, Curry works with a trainer from Detroit, with hopes of losing weight and regaining the athleticism he had that gave him the number four pick in 2001’s draft.
Now 26, Curry has around twenty million dollars and two years left in his signed Knicks contract from the year 2005. However, it is clear that his career finds itself at a crossroads while his future living in New York is shrouded in doubt. Curry is an eager trade out for the Knicks since they pare their payroll to pursue an amount of star-free agents in the year of 2010.
Even though he earned around thirty-five million dollars since the year 2005, Curry seems to have had hardships paying bills when he needed to. He has already been sued a minimum of five times for not paying for the past eighteen months. The majority of these cases have actually been resolved since then, though.
He was sued in July of 2008 after failing to pay for several jewelry pieces over three-year periods. The settlement terms are of a private nature. In December, he was sued for not paying at a male’s clothing store, though he claimed that he had paid for all o the clothes. This may have been an oversight since he had a lot of money and must have just forgotten all about it. In a case filed in February of 2008, he was sued by a trainer in Chicago who claimed that Curry had breached the agreement for hire. The case was let go in December without exchanging any money.
