Austin is an important political center, the capital of Texas (the largest state in the United States) and the county seat of Travis County. It is built in the central part of Texas. It ranks 15th in population among all the cities in the United States. It had a very strong population boom in the early part of this decade, being one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

Pioneers exploring the Colorado River initially settled the metropolitan area surrounding Austin. It was known as Waterloo but renamed Austin, after Stephen F. Austin who was nicknamed the "father of Texas". This city quickly turned into the political and educational center of the Republic of Texas, housing the state capitol and the University of Texas. It now has a population of about 1.7 million residents.

In the last few years, it has gained a name for itself as an important business and technology center in the country. It is home to many companies including the headquarters of Whole Foods Market, Forestar Group, Dell Computers and Freescale Semiconductor. In 2010, Facebook also accepted a proposal to build offices in the city.

The demographics of the city are quite diverse. It has a large gay community as well as people from all occupations. During the 90s, the city promoted itself as "Silicon Hill", thanks to the numerous high-tech research centers. Now it is promoted as "The Live Music Capital of the World" due to the many venues for live music that are available in the city as well as to the very large musicians' community. Residents of Austin are known for having a very offbeat lifestyle, and liberal views, something unique in traditionally conservative Texas. Another common nickname for Austin is the city of the "Violet Crown," due to the way the sunset glows in the winter. Many businesses in Austin use this nickname in their company name and advertising.
